It’s not pathetic to care about your heritage. And many Americans honor that without pretending they’re the exact same as someone born and raised in the country their descendants came from. Some Americans do act like heritage makes them the same, and you’re not wrong that it isn’t the same at all, because they were still born and raised in America. I still remember Irish-American Dennis Leary saying how he was more Irish than Bono, and how bullshit that was.

But when Zachary Levi said he was Welsh, that was more him explaining that his real last name and heritage was Welsh, not him saying that he was literally a Welsh citizen. He’s not pretending he’s suddenly not an American. There was no reason for you to get so mad over that comment.

But he's not. He's American. This is my whole point. If English people with the same level of Welsh blood as he has went around claiming to be Welsh they would get mocked and quite rightly too. Even though it's just as much their heritage as his.

There's a joke in Ireland 'nothing more Irish than an American with a drop of Irish blood'. You see these people all the time on tours, being obnoxious as f*ck. Frankly, you're all a bit of a joke, trying desperately to claw some meaning and culture into your 2d paper cut out of a country.

Okay but why do you keep sidestepping the actual, relevant point that in this conversation about why a man has a certain *name*, heritage is what matters, not nationality? If an English person had a traditionally Welsh last name and explained it away by saying they're "Welsh", they wouldn't be mocked because most people are not totally batshit like you.

It might be petty and just down to semantics but if the guy had said "I have Welsh ancestry" or "the name is Welsh" they probably wouldn't have minded because that's not wrong. Saying "I'm Welsh" is, though.

It’s not wrong, because he didn’t mean it literally. It’s just a phrase. I personally don’t disagree that “I have Welsh heritage” or “The name is Welsh” would make the point clearer to people not familiar with the (admittedly primarily American)phrase. But it’s a phrase that’s been around for a while, and anyone acting in good faith wouldn’t lose their shit over it. And honestly, who cares what someone who rages over petty semantics would mind or not? They’ve shown that they might not deserve the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their credibility in this case.

It's still factually wrong.

Well yeah, if it’s taken literally. It’s not supposed to be. And obviously, it doesn’t stop some Americans from taking it literally too, and assuming they’re basically the same as the people who live in the countries their descendants are from.

I’m not saying it’s a good phrase, or one I would use, but it is one regardless.

Ah, so you’re just an “America sucks lol” idiot with no actual point. I shouldn’t have bothered then, especially because you clearly didn’t even try to read anyone’s comments before doubling down on being disingenuous. America has problems, but so does Europe. And the rest of the world too. It doesn’t mean people don’t look like fools when they try to generalize another country and and all it’s people based on stereotypes and personal anecdotes. That would go for someone trying to do the same thing for where you’re from.
