I hate when stories have "meaningful names" that are so obvious, unusual, and specific, but no one in-universe ever comments on them.
Remus Lupin - becomes a werewolf
Kyle Nimbus - becomes a mist cloud

I mean, Remus Lupin is more obvious because um, Latin, and their spells are Latin. But the other ones? I'd have to look them up. Most people in English speaking/written media don't have names that are in English, which is why it's a "fun fact" to know your name's meaning

I always assumed there was a scene we didn't get to see where the Marauders find out about Lupin's werewolfness and have a conversation about how appropriate it is, given his name. I wouldn't have necessarily expected Harry or Ron to get it and Hermione would maybe be too polite to mention it outright?

SAME. It's so irritating. You want me to believe that someone's parents chose a random name from another language that connects specifically to a mythology or meaning, and then they grew up to become the embodiment of the thing they were named after? Nah fam. That's a bad author choice all the way. JKR is egregious about this on multiple levels. I mean, shit, my favorite media is One Piece and even I roll my eyes sometimes at Oda's name puns. I give him a pass because he's got over 600 named characters, they can't all be as clever as Cavendish.

Like, if you did grow up to be the embodiment of your name, like your parents sincerely loved Ariadne as a name and you just so happened to become an unraveller of mazes, someone around you should definitely go "wait..." and it could be funny. But the sheer number of creators who reach for this device means it would only be funny one or twice and then it becomes unfunny...and painfully obvious.

I read this book once where the main character was named Dusa. She said her parents got it from Dusa, Fish, Stas, and Vi. She turned out to be a direct descendant of Medusa. I called bullshit.

I feel like I'm the opposite. If a character's name were to be addressed, I think I would find it too much of a 4th wall break and lose my immersion. Seeing a name that's really on the nose that goes unaddressed to me feels more like the author/creator giving the audience a clue or a knowing wink and that doesn't bother me (for the most part).

It only really bothers me when it's a woman named Cassie/Cassandra, because it's so overused and so obvious. It's not even used correctly most of the time, because in fantasy it's used for seers and in regular fiction it usually refers to a woman who tells the truth (you could put Cassandra Mortmain in that category, for example.) The only really fair fictional Cassandra allusion I can stand is from Promising Young Woman, because it's not just a woman telling a truth, it's a woman telling a truth and not being believed, which is arguably the whole point.

But yeah, name your seers anything else.

You should probably stay away from the Ace Attorney series if you're a gamer.

Stay away from Once Upon a Time if you're planning to binge on the complete series (I did and I've liked only season 1). They're very on the nose with the name puns (examples being Regina = Queen and Mary Margaret Blanchard = Mary being the mother of Jesus the savior, Margaret means "pearl" and pearls are white, which is what Blanche/Blanchard means. The one I've facepalmed was Mr. Gold, as if this series wasn't cheesy enough)

Maybe it's nominative determinism.

I mean, given how much anti-werewolf sentiment there is in Britain, you'd think there would be some sort explanation why, with the last name Lupin, his parents chose 'Remus' as a first name for their kid, if they didn't want him to end up as one. Plus, it's pretty weird Hermione didn't comment on the name. And, actually, Fenrir Greyback is probably more anvilicious.

I can't get excited about Graham's show these days. The social distancing just kills the atmosphere I used to love. With other shows, I don't mind. In fact, looking back at other shows' old episodes, I think the people look sort of uncomfortably crushed together. But I miss the energy of Graham's couch so much that it makes me too sad to watch the new episodes.

It depends for me. If the world of that piece of media includes magic, I'm cool with creatures being immune to everything except a particular weakness. Magic is a reasonable explanation for why something would be immune to normal things. But if there isn't any magic, and the worldbuilding is really mostly just real life with creatures added, then I'm sceptical about the idea of a creature evolving to be immune to gun shots.

Transcript: I have never watched an episode of Supernatural before. When Destiel became one-sided canon, I became swept up watching the chaos, experiencing the shock and euphoria secondhand. It was a trainwreck, but it was almost like seeing a miracle. As a teen, I "grew up" around fanon slash ships like Merthur, Sterek, Johnlock, etc. and never thought any of them would happen. But it did. For nights afterward, until the finale came out, I had vivid dreams of going online and discovering that it was endgame and Dean explicitly returned Cas' feelings.

80s/90s Kids toyetic tv shows

I know that the first one was really He-Man, and that was followed by Transformers, and then Ninja turtles, but what came after the Turtles? Later is the Power Rangers, the closest thing live action tv has ever come to being a cartoon, but I'm not sure what the toy shilling tv was inbetween the Turtles and Rangers. If anyone can remember those days then it'd be a great help for me.
