I think the reason a lot of people are irritated is just because it's so popular, and that just builds expectations. I mean, imagine all your friends coming from the movies raving about it, then you go see it and it's 2 hours of bouncing cocks. General reaction is lulz, but hey!
I feel all grrr towards it myself because there's millions of far better comics out there that no one will have the patience to read, and yet flock to the gay, reading it like hungry little animals. It's a little disappointing, is all! I mean, in humanity.

I do agree with this. However, if you know of some better comics, you shouldn't hide them all to yourself! Share the wealth! ;D

And sadly, because our culture still deems homosexuality as a taboo force, something like this comic will always get strong reactions like the ones "Starfighter" has received. People will flock to things they feel are popularly taboo.

I wish I could point out great graphic novels such as Transmetropolitan, MAUS, and even the Sandman series... but most times, people just don't want to think that hard. And good old fashioned sex just wins out because it's raw and doesn't require a lick of thought. ;D

Certainly! I'll rec some to you. The trouble is, I'm a tiny fly on the butt of the internet, not a BNF at all-- and while I rec things to friends, they never really read 'em. However they all read Starfighter as soon as I mention it! I mean, yeah, it's a lot shorter but it makes me sad nonetheless~ Personally I prefer reading a good story over porn, would rather waste my time on that.
http://www.nofna.com/ has 10%+ and Secretary, which are gorgeous and undeniably creative. However, they star animals. Haha no one'll read it with me ): 'its just not interesting to me', I hear from most. Which I can respect... just mope about.
http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php Gunnerkrigg Court ~the art wasn't always the best, but it's still good, with a creative plot.
http://www.lackadaisycats.com/ 1920-30's comic about Lackadaisy, a bootlegging joint in prohibition-era America.

I'm only butthurt about Starfighter because eeeveryone on the flist/lj has thumbed through that, and not a one totes around icons or rec's to ^^^^ comics!

Gunnerkrigg Court! Great suggestion, I love that webcomic. The art got definitely better with time, looking back at the first pages now is kind of "awww" inducing because you can clearly see the author's style improved.
Lackadaisy looks nice, might read it.

heck yes Gunnerkrigg! His style definitely improved in time, and it helps with the timeline of the comic; they actually appear to be aging! It's so awesome. Seeing the characters develop as his style does. And Coyote, oh that Coyote.
You should go for it. I'm a nerd for history, the 1920s especially, and it's totally a hoot. Gorgeous art, captivating characters~

Well, idk, I think the popularity of Starfighter depends on where you're looking? Some yaoi-loving crowds on LJ are into it, sure, but the wider internet seems a little clueless. I do frequent some art forums, some of which have comic sections, and um, honestly, only one has mentioned it and it was responded with a lot of "what the hell's that?" On the list of popular webcomics online, I'd put Starfighter well below the top 50? Honestly? Considering the scope of the professional, actually published ones. Outside of LJ, I've only seen it even mentioned even the once, and that was on that forum where no one but me and one other poster even knew of it.

As far as better comics, what I'm currently reading are Lackadaisy (already recc'd) and a whole lot of minor serious comics. I'm not really into funny ones much, and I'm a shallow whore when it comes to art. If the art isn't pretty, I don't even bother usually.

I'll bookmark all of those, and get to 'em when I've the time for sure. Thank you for sure! Fungus Grotto, Red Moon Rising, Ghosts and World Break most definitely. I hope they're half as interesting as they are pretty, haha.

Well, that's precisely what I mean by popular- on LJ. It's true that it's pretty unknown the most of the internet, you'd be right there, but I'm only a little butthurt that an entire flock of people seem so wholly focused on porn instead of a thumpin' good read. It takes all kinds, don't it? And reccing good work is throwing pearls before swine, just about literally. And it makes me frown.
