I reread the early ones as an adult and not only did they hold up, I was able to appreciate them in ways I couldn't as a kid. I got busy with other things so I never made it past book 10 or so on my reread, so maybe the later ones don't hold up as well? (Just a guess from reading the other comments here.) And the ending will never, ever be good. But I recommend at least giving the early books a try.
