I'm so sick of period shows and films with heroines who are shocked at the contemporary sexism. Seriously? That doesn't make me think they're enlightened or "ahead of their time". It just makes me think that they're painfully naive and out of touch.

Women don't get shocked by the contemporary level of sexism, not unless they are written by men or by painfully naive writers. Why do they think women would not notice the very fabric of their daily existence? You can still write about them coping with the sexism without them being shocked by it.

Shocked, or angry? I haven't seen a lot of historical things where women's reactions to sexism seemed unrealistic. Just because they knew it existed doesn't mean all women just took it lying down, especially if they encountered a form of sexism they hadn't personally experienced before, like not being able to even attempt a particular trade because they were told "Go away, no women allowed."

Like, I've seen people ask "Why are you shocked lol" in internet arguments when the person they're arguing with is not shocked, just showing a reaction, so I'm a bit skeptical people know what that word really means.

The one example of actual shock that seemed out of place in a historical setting like you're talking about, is in the 1993 A Little Princess movie, when Sara's told that Becky can't talk to her because "She's a servant girl, and she has dark skin," and Sara goes "SO?!" Bitch, you literally grew up in India. Cut the wide-eyed bullshit.

If I walked to the store and caught some street harassments I'd be shocked because that hasn't happened since I was 20. But in all seriousness ->

When period characters behave this way it's because the creators aren't thinking of a character living in her world, they're imagining a character living in a world that is foreign to them. It's never a good sign. I mean I guess the characters could be really naïve or sheltered or self absorbed or coddled or whatever else so they've never experienced the world and thought about their path through it but that's only interesting if it's done on purpose.

I always pooh-poohed Eurovision as a ridiculous, campy pageant that I had no interest in. But this year I watched the finals and now I'm so impatient for the next one. I didn't even get to watch it with Graham Norton's snarky commentary, which probably makes it even better.

ME TOO!! I had zero eurovision opinions before this year, and I watched it in a language I didn't speak so no commentary, but I am basically living on eurovision playlists and waiting for next year. Why does time go so fast except for when you're waiting for ridiculous shiny music shows????

I really wish I had gotten into these books as a kid. They sound great and full of well-executed concepts. I'm afraid to try and read them now, since I doubt they hold up to an adult reader without nostalgia glasses on.
