Squid Game

Y'all, I'm way behind the curve but I've heard through osmosis that people let their kids watch this show and I'm all of an episode and a half into it and What. The. Fuck. Is. WRONG. With People?

WHY WOULD YOU EVER LET A KID WATCH THIS?

Easier than parenting?

I'm only on S1, E3 and I can't understand why a child would be allowed to watch this show at all.

Are the parents actually letting them watch it or are kids just watching Squid Game 'cause they can? My parents never let me watch Family Guy or Married With Children, but I found the access code numbers and just watched Fox whenever they weren't in the living room.

There are certain big family groups on fb where hundreds of people will proudly tell you they let their kids watch it. Anyone not fully agreeing with their parenting choice (and there are a few brave enough to speak up) gets dogpiled, called a Karen and told to 'be kind'. It's insanity.

This doesn't surprise me at all. As a kid I would hear other children talk about being allowed to watch bloody graphic horror movies back in the VHS/dvd age. The only difference is that now its even easier to access with streaming service because the parents don't give a shit about what their kids are watching until it affects them directly in someway (unless of course the kids are just watching this stuff behind their folks back).

my mum forbade me from watching South Park and the more adultish anime (Evangelion) on the tv but I still found a way to watch it. I was in like, first year high schools so abt 11-12.

I remember being 5 when the It miniseries with Tim Curry came out. My mom didn't allow me to watch it but some of my friends' (of the same age) parents let them watch it and one of the kids developed a phobia of drains.

I've always felt I would be very allowing when it came to what I'd let my kid watch. In my experience, controlling what your kid watches is usually more harmful than whatever harm might be done by them seeing something they're too young for (presuming they're at least, IDK, seven or eight).

That said, I have to agree that Squid Game is...a lot. It's not the gore, or the fact that there are so many on-screen deaths, but the way those deaths occur narratively. Some kids may be totally unaffected by it, but others could definitely end up having a crisis about their own mortality that they aren't remotely equipped to deal with.

Negligence, or the children in question are disobeying their parents a metric f$&kton.
