Re: What makes a NOTP?

Generally when there's something completely messed up with the relationship dynamics... and the people who write it are blissfully ignoring it.

So... there was this show, Almost Human? Being Human? One of the characters was an android, with very clear parallels to slavery and human rights abuses - the character was literally in danger of being turned off if he didn't perform adequately, or even if the Powers That Be changed their minds on a whim.

If people were shipping him with his partner with an awareness of how much risk he was dealing with, or unpacked his partner's more assholish behaviour, well, it might not have been my thing, but okay.

It was seeing that fraught situation turned into cloyingly sweet 'Oh they're so cute together!' that turned my stomach.

Hey, people ship what they wanna ship. I'm not going to tell someone to stop writing or change their vibe to suit me.

But that very much made them a NOTP for me.

Almost Human on FOX, I was just thinking about that show (and Michael Ealy's beautiful eyes) the other day! Never read fic for it, tho.

THIS
I am ok with fucked up dynamics, but people going uwu sweet children they are so cute tend to spoil pairing for me. (For me the most offending was Carmilla YouTube series)

As much as I love the Carmilla webseries to death, I agree that the shipping aspect got old because of all the cloying infantilizing of the ships and characters by so much of the fandom.

Yes!
And actual webseries were much more nuanced

I'm someone who often gets into fucked-up dynamics because they're fucked up and trust me: those of us there for the mess get fed up of the uwu shippers too.
