Ironically the day after this secrey would have been submitted, Discovery was made available in the UK on the Pluto tv app, for now anyway. Paramount really rushed that deal through in a hurry, I think they forgot just how rabid crazy Trek fans get. Prodigy is still a no-show though.

It's true, but it's not everywhere - I saw some Dutch and Irish fans talking about how it still isn't available to stream legally anywhere in those countries.

Surely it is only in SW Ireland they cannot get it? Irish geofencing doesn't work so well when you're in the East or the North Republic. And the occupied counties too, for obvious regions.

"occupied counties"? OFGS

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
It is an occupation.

Seriously. Why’s ayrt so defensive of the truth?

I never got around to Discovery so felt a bit "can't miss what I never had" about it but...I'm getting to the point where I'm a little fatigued over everyone having a streaming service. I'm not sure if this is just life now or the bubble will burst but there's a point where I'm considering not subscribing to any new ones and might ditch one or more of the ones I have at some point tbh.

I'm in the UK so e.g. our Netflix offering isn't too bad, but I know it can wildly vary depending on country. If other streaming platforms aren't putting up their best content everywhere I imagine people in a lot of European countries will think "pass" unless there's a show they really want to binge so they'll pay for a month or do a free trial.

Trek is a bit different because there is still so much fan-activity around it. It is one of the few fandoms that still has a lot of old style traditional fan interaction online. If you miss a broadcast date then you are out in the cold as far as the rest of fandom goes, it is why so many Trek fans feel bent over a barrel on this.

Yeah, Trek is one of those things where I love it and will watch it but never really got into the fandom side of it. Sounds like way too much pressure to keep up anyway from your description! I feel bad for anyone who was looking forward to new content though and had the rug pulled from under them. That was definitely a dick move.

I absolutely despair over all the streaming platforms coming out, like I have cable(BT) and a NF account, I don't want more because I'm not about to pay for 50 streaming services to watch one show on each. I'll either pirate or just not watch thanks.

I think your last sentence is what a lot of people will end up doing.

We've got a TV package through Virgin Media, Netflix and Disney+. Disney+ was only because when we signed up it was £45-50 for the year and we knew the Stars expansion was coming so thought it'd give us quite a lot of choice on top of their new shows. Well, I got an email recently saying the annual cost is getting bumped up to nearly £80. Definitely making me reconsider if it's worth it just to get The Mandalorian or whatever when it premiers.

Yeah, I have Netflix and Prime and if something's not on those, oh well!

I got kicked off a Trek forum for my theory that Tony Shaloub's character in Galaxy Quest had a Chinese name because it was a Trek in-joke about the fact that Brent Spiner played Dr. Soong.

I thought Kwan was based on David Carradine in Kung-Fu and the reason Shaloub played Kwan with stoner qualities was because of the rumors Carradine often did his role while on something.

never thought of that.

I live in SEA and we're completely left out because it's not even on a streaming service that's available.
