The Hobbit series was so-so, but it unironically revitalized a lot of older parts of the LOTR fanspaces. There's more decent stuff, Faramir and otherwise, than was heretofore seen in the late 90s. Trust me, you didn't miss much.

Christian group. Pushed for content purges of “immoral” fiction. They’re the reason so much old fic has been scrubbed from the Internet.

So, you might have found this archive already, OP, but if not: http://www.storiesofarda.com
was a pretty massive LOTR fic space back before AO3 (and also overlapping with AO3 for a while, but in general back in the time when LJ or separate archives were a thing). A lot of the fics that used to be on FF.net or other archives were cross-posted on Stories of Arda, and there was a pretty active community in the comments.

I dropped out of LOTR fandom a /while/ ago so I don't know what the site's like anymore, but fics are still being posted and updated as far as I can see, and the Resources page links to a bunch of the old LOTR fan spaces, including fic archives, if you want to dig around a bit.

Yeah, it sucks.
If you're interested in doing some internet archaeology, here's a starting point:

Some of the bigger archives have actually been imported to AO3, but they may only be searchable through the sub-archive page, and/or have not tags.

I was going to gripe about the Henneth Annun archive being taken down but then I found out they put (hopefully most of) it on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/hasa. That's a big 'un from the old days, you'll probably find some gems there, OP.

The weird stuff that was only one people's geocities sites... yeah, that's lost to the ravages of time. I mourn the loss of Elf Fetish every day.
