Big difference here - most of Dune is green screen whereas LOTR is location work.

We will likely never see that sort of location work happen ever again, not with the rise of whatever sorcery it is Lucasfilm is pioneering.

Is it? Why? If it looks indistinguishable (and The Mandalorian proves it does), isn't it better for everyone not to film on location? Better for the environment, better for the actors, better for the crew.

Studios don't use CGI for things that don't require CGI because it's better, they do it because it's cheaper. Grinding, crunching, and union-busting play a big role. Look at the IATSE near-strike and why. I don't think it's better for the crews at ALL.

It's not indistinguishable though. That's exactly why the Hobbit movies look so much faker than the LOTR ones even though they were made a decade later by the same people. Locations and practical effects make a huge difference still.

Even on the Mandalorian you can often see where the digital scenery panels are set on the floor. There is a scenery and props line. Same as you'd see on the old shows where they were working with a painted matte background. It isn't quite as a pop out obvious, but once you know it is there you can't help see it.

A lot of LotR was green-screen, too, just location green screen (ie: shot in a warehouse in New Zealand somewhere). Watch the endlessly fun extras, you'll see it.

Dune used a LOT of location work though. They filmed in Jordan and United Arab Emirates for Arrakis and Norway for Caladan.
