Sondheim's my favorite not because of his musical and lyrical genius, though that is legend. But because he loves writing songs about epically messy people, and the resolution is more "you'll have to deal with being messy" rather than "you gotta stop being messy"*.

*The exception from his musicals I've seen is Follies, because I have nothing but contempt for Ben and his mental breakdown song about his shallow depth really being his own self-hatred doesn't make it better. If he spent less than 90% of the musical being the worst, maybe, but he doesn't. That musical neither feels sufficiently resolved nor unresolved, so I think it's Sondheim's worst.
