Yeah, I hate it too. I'm all for critical reading and delving into the moral constraints, conventions, and framing of stuff but a lot of this just seems like a revamped "how to be edgy about popular stuff, now with clickbait." Idk, I like nuanced villains and antagonists, so I think them being "right" a little is fun, and there are definitely some media where, well, the villain was right because the media itself is written from a flawed moral perspective, but it feels like those videos/essays discourage critical thinking in favor of stan philosophy.

Mitchum Huntzberger was completely right, though.

Nah.

Based on AYITL, okay, he was at least partially right. Still a tremendous asshole to say what he said, though.

Also, fuck AYITL.

I like this kind of AU. It's innovative.

Yeah, I get it and I would probably agree if I hadn't been telling everyone that Magneto was right ever since the late nineties.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
IDK if I think Magneto was right, per se, but I do think that particular example is one of the best examples in existence of a scenario in which both sides are incredibly understandable, deeply sympathetic, and there's a LOT to be said for the opposing side. And also plenty to criticize about the "good guys'" side.

I saw a comment on one of those videos that sums up the problem with them really well: "Apparently having a motive means you were the real good guy."

TBF, I’m pretty sick of “villain who wants to fix a social problem vs. hero who does zilch to resolve the problem.”

Sort of on the opposite end of the spectrum, but I still find it hilarious how The Take had to remove their "Is Harry the REAL VILLAIN of the Harry Potter series?" because general audiences and fandomers alike were like, "that's a shit too far even for us".

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see that video, but I'm NGL, just the title makes me go, OH HELL NO, FUCK OFF WITH THAT.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I missed that one and I'm dying to know what their logic was (to use that word loosely).

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally like The Take’s videos, but they’re not immune to making not so well thought out clickbait or trendsurfing. I’m glad I missed that very lol.

There are times when it works, but for the most part, yeah, I agree. It tends to just feel like a trendy, edgy, hot take that doesn't actually hold water when examined in good faith.

I think this stems from Thanos.
