Crunchies on muffins: yea or nay?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You know how for some reason a lot of muffin manufacturers cover some of their muffins in small crunchy bits and I can't stand it because muffins are not supposed to be crunchy? What are your feelings on muffin crunchies?

I agree. Texture really matters to me. No crunchies on muffins. Then again, I'm fairly picky about muffins, if I'm buying them rather than making my own.

If it's just like a sugar/butter crunchiness, I'm down for it. If it's like nuts or something, than no.

Nay. I also don't like the ones that have a mountain of streusel on top. A bit is fine, but some places I go will have it on like an inch thick or more, and that's gross to me.

I’m actually really into corn muffins with bits of crunchy corn meal in them.

But maybe I just don’t actually like muffins at all and I’m just looking for muffin-shaped cornbread.

I don't think I've ever seen this, maybe once and it's like hard large granules of sugar that always put me off. Muffins are supposed to be soft. Like a cashmere sweater hug from your grandma who loves you. There's a reason they sold muffin tops were sold separately some point. It's that soft moist richness that I am asking for -- crunchies should not be found in the vicinity.

Streusel for the win! My only specification is that the muffin has to be really moist inside. If it's at all on the dry side, pass.

Streusel topping on a nice, moist berry muffin is the best thing ever.

I personally like it when the top is a bit crunchy, or has that amount of sugar and butter that makes the top shiny. I think it adds a nice bit of contrast to the softness of the rest of the muffin.
