It's worse than that, you're querying a book with "series" potential and you can't even tell them it has "Series" potential. So, if you have a series in mind, you have to write the first book as a "stand alone" with enough "hooks" in it if it does well, it could lead to another book deal. If that feels impossible, it's b/c it is pretty improbable to do. Publishers and thus agents, do not want to take risks on "unknown" quantities at all with the costs of paper rising and well, most editors becoming agents b/c at least as agents they get commission which can be better than an editor's salary.

You can blame Martin, and Butcher just as much as you can blame Rowling. Publishers are getting tired of "missed" deadlines and books just not being written.

Since all my ideas tend to come out as "Series" it makes me not want to even try querying. Sigh.

I blame GrrM for a lot actually. I know tons of people who won't start an unfinished series because of the one-two punch of bad adaptation and no ending to the books. (Yes yes, they could still come out, but even if he publishes book 6 tomorrow (which he won't) we're looking at 10+ years on book 7.)

JKR, for all her many faults, actually finished her books. Imagine how it would have crashed the book market if she'd given up at Order of the Pheonix and left Warner Brothers blind for the last three movies.

Yeah, I'm sadly one of them. :/ I hesitate to start series now cause I used to feel safe starting new series cause hey, look the author is bringing out books (semi-) regularly! And then GRRM, Scott Lynch, Patrick Rothfuss - or on the manga site CLAMP etc happened (and I don't even CARE about these books anymore today).

It's why I get annoyed at all those "the author (lbr it's mostly about GRRM) doesn't owe anyone anything!" ... like YES they kind of do (I'm ofc entirely sympathetic to health reasons etc).
