Uuuugh! It drives me crazy. Especially with both personal names, courtesy names, and titles! I have to figure out if you are calling him Lan Wangji, Lan Zhan, or HanGuang Jun and then decipher all your letters. It took me forever the first time I saw someone pull YLP out. It's Yiling Patriarch.

And it doesn't even work with some of the generational naming that goes on. JZX could be Jin Zixuan or Jin Zixun! Or a quick glance means I can mistake JL for JYL (Jin Ling vs Jiang Yanli).

It takes a bit getting used to at first, I admit. But if you already know you're talking about The Untamed, it's pretty clear who LWJ, LZ, or HGJ are referring to. And who wants to talk about Jin Zixun in the first place *g*. No, you're right, it can get confusing, and a bit of context goes a long way to help with that.

But I've spent around two years in cdrama fandom so far, and by now I'm not even blinking at the initials anymore. They're a neat shortcut when conversation goes fast or space is limited.

It took me a while to learn all the shorthand, but honestly? I prefer using the shorthand when chatting informally with other fans, the same way I'd use terms like AFK/OMG etc. ESPECIALLY places like twitter or in tags where there's a character limit

Now if I were writing meta or a fic or something more polished, I use/prefer the full name, but casually? I don't see a problem with using the initials.

Yes, all of this exactly! Especially when talking on Twitter, or firing a short comment at your friends.

And it took me a moment until I got it, and sometimes I do need a bit of context first, but honestly? It's really not that hard.

My first cdrama was Guardian, and when I saw ZYL I wasn't sure if they meant Zhao Yunlan or Zhu Yilong, until I learned the other neat shortcut - when talking about Zhu Yilong, people would use Z1L, which, of course! Made so much sense.

Yeah this. If it's discussion between fans abbreviating the names is fine because internet convos tend to lend towards that anyway, but things like fic/meta should use the full names. The only concession I'll give is if someone is doing a twitter fic or meta, then the abbreviations are fine because they're working with a character limit.

/shrug Abbreviations are easier. I don't really get into fandom discussions or meta, but I can totally understand why people who do would use them. Now that said, I wouldn't go nuts with them like using "YLP" for Yiling Patriarch" like another commenter mentioned, and if there's the potential for confusion I'd spell it out. But otherwise I'm pretty happy with abbreviations.
