I know nothing about this series, but from these covers I would be very disappointed to find out that the male protagonist doesn't have a deep and long-standing romantic love affair with his horse.

The horses are reincarnated humans, and in the one I read, the guy and the horse had a “lifebond” that was basically marriage. (That was the same overarching series, but not one of these three.)

AYRT

Excellent! I might actually check the series out, just out of curiosity.

The Valdemar books are a lot of tropey fantasy fun and I'm very attached to them, but a lot of them have at least one scene of kinda heavy whumpage, sometimes including (always framed as bad) sexual assault, so be forewarned

Much appreciated!

lol, I was just coming over here to comment about the horse, aka the one character that's emoting all over the place on these covers.

SA - Not that dark-haired protagonist isn't lovely, but he seems to be in the middle of a photo shoot for Calvin Klein.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, that horse is giving its all!

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, that's... kind of close, actually. The horses are Companions, and they choose and life-bond with specific humans (magic users in this universe known as heralds or in Vanyel's case, a rare herald-mage), often showing up at a really traumatic time in their lives to save them. The humans and their Companion can mindspeak, it's a whole big thing.

Now that I've seen the other replies I guess "His wife? A horse." really is inescapable.

I'm reminded of the Dauphin talking about his horse in Henry V. " It is a beast for
Perseus: he is pure air and fire; and the dull
elements of earth and water never appear in him, but
only in patient stillness while his rider mounts
him: he is indeed a horse; and all other jades you
may call beasts."

That's just one of several speeches about his horse. In another he talks about his horse being his mistress.

These covers are lovely, I have enjoyed Mercedes Lackey (despite stuff I found in her writing took me out a bit but I kept going) and I agree. I love androgynous looking people across the board. Casting (if he could act) maybe someone who looks like Willie Cartier? I feel like you'd have more luck with models/dudes walking down the street. The issue would be the acting then. And yeah. Maybe on a smaller independent level someone else could make it work, if they got bankrolled by someone and weren't beholden to them. Frankly, seeing as they're three books, would you prefer a three to five season series or just three movies?

Now I want to go read this ...

I didn't know who Carter is, but he looks like that type!

Me, I'd prefer three seasons, minimum of one season per book. Though I guess that would depend on how many episodes each season would be... maybe 10-12?

Damn, now I'm actually tempted to re-read these. I'd say I'm wary they won't hold up to my nostalgia goggled memories but I was aware even when reading them for the first time that it was tropes cheesy kitsch. Which was okay I guess (except for the "rape as a dramatic plot point" which was kind of unnecessary), just not sure if I want to read it again.

I tried re-reading them 10 years later and they don't hold up as well. the tropes are painfully obvious and yeah the rape as plot point sucks. the second book is the best because the lead being gay isn't the entire point of the plot, it's just sort of in the background (though using him to drive an implied pedo subline is not...cool).

UGH WORD that FUCKING scene. I reread these books recently, and they weren't bad (some, uh, some very eighties views on sexuality, denial of bisexuality, and some Very Weird assumptions about gay people), but that fucking scene was exactly as bad as I remembered.

I got you. In Magic's Price, chapter 17, Vanyel and Stefan are ambushed by bandits and Stefan runs off into the woods. STOP READING THERE- all you need to know is that Vanyel is tortured and Stefan and Yfandes save him, then they spend a lot of time healing. Start up again in chapter 19.
