I'm not a fan of "Steve was the only one worthy of the shield". But at the same time, I wish there was more of a focus on the fact that different people are valuable icons at different times and in different ways. The goal is not to step into Steve's shoes exactly, but to replicate his determination to be something better and inspire others to the same.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with you on this.

Steve is out of the picture, anyway. Should the shield be a museum exhibit again? That seems pointless.

I agree with you on this. Unfortunately, for me, that didn't come across well in the show itself. The behavior of the fandom did not help.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm genuinely confused because I don't think the series was telling us that at all.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming OP is referring more to fan reactions than the actual show itself. I'm not really in the fandom, but also wouldn't be surprised if this was a popular implication.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen a few fans say they're glad the "bland white guy who's probably racist becaus he's from the 40s" is out of the way so "better" characters can take over the role, so I'd be zero percent surprised if op is talking specifically about fan responses
goodbyebird: Captain America 2: Sam snatches Steve out of the ait and hauls him upwards. (Avengers #marrieds)

The MCU fandom I've seen loves Steve to bits and pieces, seems like you're letting a few edgy people get under your skin? To me they're equally wonderful, but Sam certainly wasn't treated as such (for, ahem, reasons I'm sure nobody can pinpoint).

Could be some of those folks didn't follow along once Steve was out of the picture, and now the loudest fans are the ones that were disappointed for years and now feel like they "won" and are being bratty about it... or maybe just celebratory and you have thin skin because of Reasons 🤷🏻‍♀️

(On a tangent, I wouldn't be surprised if Bucky/Zemo is the bigger ship of the show. For ~reasons~)

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more than "just a few" people shitting on Steve in FATWS fandom; it's enough that it sets the whole tone of that fandom. Also, Sam/Bucky is the juggernaut. Many of the shippers are awful to anyone who ships either one of them with anyone else, and particularly mean to anyone who ships Bucky with anyone else. They are even worse towards nonshippers. Sam was also treated quite well in the Cap movies. He wasn't center stage in the Avengers films, but that makes sense, considering that the Avengers are already a sizeable ensemble cast.

It's also interesting that you think there can only be one reason that someone might not love Sam as much as you do. That says much more about you than it does about anyone else, and what it says is not particularly flattering. Your personal attack isn't the "gotcha" that you think it is.
goodbyebird: Community: Abed dressed as Batman: "I am Batman. Or am I? Yes. I am Batman." (Community if I stay there can be no part)

[personal profile] goodbyebird 2021-12-08 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry you seem to have stumbled into a very brattish portion of fandom. Anyone who shipwars isn't worth the time of day.

Sam was also treated quite well in the Cap movies.

Never claimed the source material treated him poorly. (though they did screw us all over by making Cap 3 essentially another Avengers flick)

It's also interesting that you think there can only be one reason that someone might not love Sam as much as you do.

I don't think there's just one reason someone might not love Sam. People have different tastes. But when it's a discernible pattern across fandoms for coc, I know that's a factor with the majority of them.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But Sam is one of the most popular characters in FATWS fandom, and one half of the juggernaut ship. FATWS fandom isn't following your pattern. Racism might be a factor for some people, but not necessarily for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
That's really not what the show was saying, but I did see some people in the fandom saying that. As well as driving off potential fans by being very purist about how you were "allowed" to write Sam.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Many people in the fandom were and are saying that, to the point where many fans who also love Steve have been put off.

As for the show itself, there were some places where the narrative came across to me as "this is the Right Thing because it's What Sam Wants" rather than "Sam wants to do this because it's the Right Thing To Do." I'm particularly thinking of his dealings with Sarah and Karli. I also didn't like the way Sam and Bucky were behaving in general. They were acting like a pair of fifteen-year-old assholes, not grown men.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen FATWS but good lord, *every* CA movie is "this is right because this is what Steve wants." Jesus. By any objective lens you can't look at Steve selfishly interfering with the timeline to get his chance with Peggy, who by all accounts led a perfectly fulfilling life without him, as "The Right Thing to Do." Or him helping to injure/kill a fuckton of LEOs and civilians in Bucharest to save one person. I'm speaking in objective terms. That's not the right thing to do. Sure, it's the Steve thing to do, but what if Sam did it for Riley? Would the narrative support it? I don't think so. The Russos were crazy in love with Steve Rogers and bent the narrative to support his actions, having a bomb go off and countless cars flip but no bodies crushed or blood or gore, having a guy thrown off a motorcycle but not showing him go under the wheels. Because causing manslaughter of civilians to save one person is the Right Thing To Do in the Steve narrative.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, I don't know what movies you were watching, because this isn't even a skewed take on canon, it's just plain wrong.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-09 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
It’s really not objectively wrong. It’s debatable, but easy to see what AYRT means. A big problem with the MCU to me, phase one at least, is that so many actions feel like “This is the right thing to do because Steve or Tony or another character want to do”.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you mean the guy who covered for HYDRA for over 2 years and let the Winter Soldier run around with triggers because only HE could be the one to find him (and help hide him away before the Winter Soldier could provide any information about his handlers or his victims)? THAT worthy guy?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What movies have you been watching?

Try harder troll.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not even a disingenuous reading of the films, it's straight up wrong.

You need to rewatch CW.

DA I have, and it's still straight up wrong.

Secret OP here. Thank you for so graphically demonstrating the behavior that has put me off.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know if it's anthony mackie being a prick that makes me viscerally dislike the character or if i'd be rubbed the wrong way by this regardless, but yeah.

although tbh i don't think steve himself deserves the shield after endgame.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
He does if you ignore the Skrull going back in time at the end.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
SA Steve does, I mean.
