Is this the gay necromancer? He doesn’t look like he gets a lot of sunlight.

Nah, it's the gay necromancer's boyfriend

YMMV but I always find it so strange when people praise the dude's acting in this because I couldn't get over how this guy wasn't allowed to move his face while everyone else emoted like regular human beings. It was weird as hell.

That's the acting that everyone is praising--that he was able to convey all of the emotions (and even various ages of the same character) with minimal movement.

It kinda went with the character, who was extremely reserved and emotionally rather cold.

Honestly, I had a similar reaction to the first few eps. "He has a face like a dead fish," is, I think, what I was saying to myself.

Then I tried the drama again, and got a little further through the story, and then realised I was completely glued to his micro-expressions.

And I still don't know if his acting improved or if I started paying more attention or what.

Wang Yibo (the actor who played Lan Wangji) has mentioned that he struggled a lot with how to play his character and thinks that he didn't really do as good of a job in the earlier episodes. But after further discussion with the director, he got a better understanding about the character (and presumably, was given tips on using micro expressions) and tried to improve. I've watched the show multiple times now and while I think part of it was getting used to Lan Wangji's very remote, detached demeanor, Wang Yibo definitely gets more comfortable in the role as he goes on.

Oh, that's interesting to know.

In any case, I hope he does well in his future career.

but what are the 'earlier' episodes cos nobody shoots anything in chronological order. Those scenes are probably in the middle or towards the end.

He got shitty direction. Honestly if you had a character described as "outwardly cold but with deep subtle emotions" and your notes to your actor is "literally don't move your facial muscles", you're a hack.
