I want to help but I'm a little nervous. Are there any negative consequences to this?

I dunno? What possible consequences could their be? You're applying for a job you (hopefully) don't intend to take. It's a way to clog their system.

In the reddit thread, there's a link to a thing that generates fake data that will populate the application template. You can use that I imagine if you don't want your real info there.

Possibly? If you use your real info, and are drawing unemployment, and you are offered a job, and you turn the job down, you could lose unemployment benefits for turning down a job offer. But that's a lot of ifs.
