I agree for all the reasons you stated and also cause most fics I've tried to read (admittedly many years ago before I feel out of love with HP as a whole, so it might have changed) portrayed them as super close when they were younger or having some sort of special bond with each other from the beginning and totally downplayed Sirius' relationship with James. What we know about Sirius about canon really can't be divorced from that friendship and reading it as not as important as the romance feels ooc from the get go.
(Tbf I always thought it would be much easier to write Sirius as being in love with James)
