Games thread!

The only thing to do is speak to a different set of friends, and if they find things to criticise in your choices, then you are and idiot with bad taste. It is the scientific method. At least then you will know.

Also just like what you like, even if it is trash.

I've been there. It's exhausting. Obviously, they aren't doing it to offend you, and of course they're entitled to their opinion. But it still feels awful when all you wanted to do was share something that resonated with you with someone else, and then they react like that.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-12 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like a mismatch on both sides tbh. You just want to share what you like and be told it's nice, which is fair enough.

On the flip side, "how it could have been better" and "what they could have done with it" is the basis of all fanwork and fanfic, no? What do you think of your friend's "rewrites" or how she thinks it should have gone? Are they better? Worse? Do you have anything to say back or add? It doesn't seem like you're interested in engaging with that part of it, which is what your friend might be looking for, too.

I can't figure out what's going on with that dude's hair. What the hell?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been there on the other side and it's equally exhausting to watch something, try to engage someone in discussion about the thing they recced by going "this would've been so much better if this or that" or "wow they handled this part badly when they could have just done this other thing" and then the reccing friend drops the entire thing with "I guess you didn't like it nvm" and doesn't want to think about any of those things.

Like friend, I am your friend, not the show's friend. I want to talk about the thing with you and if the only thing you will accept is praise for your show, I can't talk about it with you. So I just stop watching their recs, since I can find shows I like on my own and their goal was clearly not to watch things with me or hear my thoughts on them - it was to spread their show.

It looks like a very stylised pompadour.

da

I wonder how OP's friend is expressing their opinion too. I think it's easier to respond to someone saying that something could have been written better, than it is to someone just being dismissive and/or scornful of something.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-12 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was gonna say. If I criticize something, it's because I like the thing except for that one aspect of it/think that particular aspect could have been done better. One of my friends and I are watching through a show right now and we just had a long discussion about how we thought a certain plot element would have been more effective if they'd presented it in a different way because we felt that it kind of fell flat the way it was written. We like the show! We just thought it would have been better if they'd handled that one thing differently.

Ohhh, I see it now! I'm on mobile and thought the scars(?) were part of it.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-12 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this with my friends too and tbh these are the most engaging and fun conversations. There isn't much to be said if everyone likes everything about some movie besides "well, that was great!" But if you find out everyone thought this theme or that theme was handled totally shittily and everyone has different ideas about how they could've done it, it gets really interesting tbh

Ding Dong, the fanfic hating witch is dead!
