Because it's not about the content, it's about control.

They can't control what happens in canon, assuming they even watch the source material in the first place. Bullying other fans for daring to create such things in their spaces, however, gets them the attention they crave, plus recognition and applause from their fellow fannish puritanicals.

There are a lot of people who watched South Park when they were teenagers and then stopped watching it when they got older. Or watched the first couple seasons of Rick and Morty and then stopped watching because they got annoyed at the fanbase.

lol this so much - its both so painfully hilarious and stupid at the same time.
There's this idea that 'you are watch you watch' hence why people in recent years have been trying to apply morals media in general - which becomes fluidly rampant in fandoms like those based on kids media (Steven Universe) or anything trying to promote more diversity only to be put on a higher pedestal than cis/het-normative media so if the get so much as an inch close to anything remotely problematic its cancelled for 'bad representation'.
Whereas media that goes into the deep end of problematic shines a light on how stupid the moral framework in fandom is and doesn't work the same way - because in fandoms where people have talked themselves into believing applying their moral into fandoms is a form of social justice can't work in the same way for characters/stories that are 'morally bad'

I do believe that there are people who handle watching problematic content while keeping their ethics intact; but unfortunately these crusaders of the greater good believe that every single person is so dumb that they'll immediately go into monkey-see-monkey-do mode despite media being literally fictional.
