She had issues, and I didn't like her, but I'm not here for callously celebrating her death.

Also, I had no idea she was that old. For some reasons, in my head she was like...late fifties? I guess because I wasn't really aware of her until the early 00s. I think I thought IWAV was written in the mid-90s not the mid-70s, lol.

I was really out here thinking she was 40 for the last 15 years. I think I was basing everything off the movie and not the actual book lol

I never had a problem with her policy. I think an author ought to remain in control of their brand identity. A little bit of gatekeeping and living in fear of the Cease and Desist help fandom spaces be less fractious and entitled too.

I didn't realise she was already 80. She seemed younger to me. I'm sad to hear she died.

Were her most recent comments on fanfiction. Seemed pretty normal for someone in the 90s to be wary of fanfiction considering it was and is a grey area when it comes to copyright.

Hmm, this is actually kind of a relief to read! Because while I did like her writing, and understood her perspective (heaven knows there are enough people in FANDOM who "claim" characters as theirs and declare that anything that anyone else writes about them is wrong = and unlike them, she actually had some basis for thinking that way), it irked me that she actually involved legal proceedings instead of just... not engaging.

I still think that was crap of her, but it's good to know that eventually she got to a point where she also seems to have recognized that it wasn't "wrong" to write fanfic, and she just didn't want to actually see it, and went with that. I never heard much about her for the last decade or so.

I think this thread is in incredibly poor taste. :( It's not like she was evil. She just didn't like fanfic.

RIP, Anne Rice. The Vampire Lestat was one of my fav. books as a teen.

Being this callous about someone who had opinions on fanfic you didn't like reflects far worse on you than it ever will on her.

I hope her family and friends are doing as well as they can be and that they're supported in their time of grief, it's never easy to loose a loved one. May she rest in peace.

Death comes to everyone. She was 80 years old and probably had a neutral death, nothing too horrific and traumatizing. I'm not relieved nor saddened. It is what it is.
I don't understand people's joyous reaction to her death since yes, she has "history" in fandom, but I believe she was just a flawed human with deep insecurities that at the time (and maybe until death, who knows?) didn't really understand what fandom and fanfiction were. I get that she hurt people and fandom in general with her ignorance and whatever, but I don't get this reaction.
These types of posts just bore me.

I have such mix feelings about her death - mostly because in the latter years I hated her; not just for her particular 'contributions' towards fandom, but how badly her books depicted POC and that who mess with describing an intersex character in Blackwood Farm in addition to so many other issues I had with her and her writing.

With all that said, the Vampire Chronicles were the first books I retreated into when I was an bullied 12 year old baby gay trying to find queer characters that I could relate to when there was absolutely nothing for my age group (very early 2000s in the UK had this belief that being gay was a life style choice that should absolutely not involve children in any way, even if those kids were questioning themselves or not sticking to 'the norm'). I got very attached to the relationship dynamics, characters like Louis and just enjoying vampires before being able to go online and discover fan forums/fandoms.

idk - I'm not sad or anything, but still condolences for her loved ones. I was a little surprised that I didn't really see anything pop up about her on any of my social media accounts with the exception of one elder goth I follow who was just paying respects. I guess its fitting to see the hate here tbh lol.

Her works were and remain inspirational for countless readers. I thank her for the good memories I have of many of her novels.
