(I'm also going to admit that I liked LKH's books back when they had plots that weren't just sex + power creep + harem. Of course, I also read them when I was a young teen SO LIKE dubious judgement was a thing.)
tbh I prefer Seanan McGuire when she's writing as Mira Grant. Even then, she's pretty awful about how she treats non-pov women, but I found the Newsflesh trilogy's plot to be intriguing enough that I actually enjoyed it and the women-issues are way, WAY toned down compared to the Toby Daye books. There's a few UF I do enjoy but most of them come with their own caveats so I'll refrain from unsolicited recs!
I actually find I have better luck in the paranormal mystery section of things, where the emphasis is on the mystery instead of on the urban fantasy (tho really, most of these also qualify, but they're not the same shelves and there IS a pretty big difference between them). Sure, there's definitely formulas, but many, MANY of them feature women doing things like running their own shops, getting their shit together, being excellent to their friends, and falling in love along the way. Are they the deepest books on the market? LOL no. But a lot of them are really endearing character-wise and the bad guys are Bad and I'm down for it.
