I don't know about the majority. AFAIK no one has done, like, representative polling. Certainly, it was divisive. But I also wonder if what OP means by "modern Star Wars fans" is "people who liked Luke's writing in TLJ", meaning by implication that only the ones who didn't like it are True Star Wars Fans.

Also, Luke's writing in TLJ was great.

More like the ones who were saying they liked TLJ's writing were accusing the older fans of not being real fans or deserving a place in fandom. There were posts, in this very comm, applauding it making older fans angry, upset, and unwelcome.

It isn't even as if it was an original character arc. JJ had pulled the same burnout to re-born believer with Han in the previous movie. So it wasn't even original bad writing.

Link?

It's *Star Wars*. Strictly speaking none of it is really original. And Luke's plot is bound up with the history of the Jedi as an institution in a really interesting way that sets it apart from Han's plot.

Dude, nobody is going back through three years of posts to satisfy your dumb demands.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, are you expecting me to take it on faith that people who like TLJ are trying to drive older fans out of the fandom?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-15 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The only faith you have is bad faith arguments, and it is so very obvious that you are just trying to get someone to fight you so you can be dismissive of anything that would be brought.

Wow, the projection...

Sad I beat you to the punch, Anon I Was Replying To? Don't like being dismissed the way you were planning to do yourself?

Don't bother, it's one of our resident asshole trolls.

My thoughts exactly.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-15 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did that happen? Because all I saw were people who liked TLJ(most of whom are self-professed older Star Wars fans) being told that they didn’t actually like it, they just enjoyed seeing real old Star Wars fans despair at having their favorite franchise be ruined. And they also basically said that the director was some kind of evil sociopath.

Like, anything is possible, and maybe you can point to a different thread where what you’re talking about happened. But the most recent discourse I’ve seen here was several fans who like TLJ, including Philstar, being attacked and accused of having sinister ulterior motives for liking a movie. Probably by one specific anon with a chip on their shoulder.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, those who liked TLJ never saw anyone who liked TLJ behaving badly at all. You're the victims, of course.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve never seen TLJ, and I’m not really that into Star Wars. I was just recounting the most recent TLJ related discourse I saw here. And I literally never said that there weren’t people who liked TLJ that are assholes.

But now I know all you have so far is defensive and dismissive “comebacks” and accusations. That speaks to how good faith your arguments actually are. Which is funny, because you’ve accused someone else of acting in bad faith just for asking for sources for your argument. I’m not even saying I don’t believe you that what you’re talking about has happened on F!S, especially if you weren’t talking about the most recent heated discussion of the movie. But being a prick to everyone who has anything but automatic agreement isn’t the way to go about painting yourself as any better than the people who made you feel unwelcome in this community.

But in the end, do you actually believe that everyone who likes this one movie wants to “push older fans out of the fandom”? Or is that just an exaggeration of the moment? Because like I said, several people insulted just for saying they like the movie are old fans. It’s pretty obvious that the group you’re referring to would be a vocal minority just like most jerks in fandom. Not everyone who dislikes TLJ would be a jerk either.

The fuck, Why should I, you, or anyone else be responsible for the actions of some random groups of fans or monitor their behaviour...? Once fandom is big enough the asshole fractions will po up on all sides - why are we pretending they represent those sides all of a sudden?

Go, TLJ discourse is so exhuasting. I liked some parts of it a lot and had issues with some parts of it, but it's getting hard to discuss any of it online without someone coming in with their projections and baggage...

Yup! I remember that troll.
