I think sometimes that’s overstated. Like with Jasper/Lapis shipping in Steven Universe. It requires a lot of change on Jasper’s part, but I don’t think it’s out of character. It’s just character growth.

It's always a matter of interpretation. Interpretation is a moving target and fanfiction, by definition, has to diverge from the canon character in some way just by virtue of the fact that it is created by fans and is not canon.

There's character growth and then there's copying and pasting someone else's entire personality onto an existing character without explanation.

Or at least, that's how I interpreted OP's secret.

Well, in my main fandom there's a ship where one dude is usually written pretty in line with his canon personality, and the other dude, who is canonically a violent egotist criminal gang member who kills people both to rob the corpses so he can buy fancy clothes and for shits and giggles, is written as an emo guy with a heart of gold hidden behind a nonviolent pseudo-bad-boy persona, so I'd say that's pretty OOC

I get this, especially for fics which kinda float in the canon timeline or are AU, but I think it's particularly egregious when fics make a point orient the fic in canon at a time when those characters would never and provide zero reason. but mainly I'm happy if they tag it.
