I once made a secret how much the giant cross weirded me out and the response was extremely mild "he can do what he wants it's his land". Now I'm equally weirded out by people who don't bat an eyelid at shit like this.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that secret. There was some people who agreed wit you, but it was bit weird how the general response was. Especially because you never said he shouldn’t be allowed to do what he wants with his land. Just that what he chose to put there seemed a tad fanatical.

I remember that secret too. I was one of the people who said that the stick cross was ugly, and represented nothing actually good about his own personal character.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I think that yeah, it's obviously his land and he can do whatever he wants with it... but it's still weird, IMO. Big displays of religiosity make me uncomfortable and wary because I've learned to distrust the sort of people who make those claims in such a public way. There's usually hypocrisy involved.

I mean, if it were just this cross thing I still wouldn't be all that fussed beyond the initial, "Huh, Pratt is weirdly religious." To be honest, as a non-American, "weirdly religious" describes a lot of the US for me, so I've learned to take that in stride.

The other stuff that's coming in out in the comments today, like being a 3%er, now that shit is actually concerning.

Another non-American here, and I am cackling.

Pratt is weirdly religious by American standards. And Americans aren't really as religious as in-groups of you non-Americans go looking for as confirmation bias about so you can say "Welp it's a good thing I'm not crazy like that. My life in my wonderfully secular country sure is grand compared to that. I can sleep peacefully at night now."

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
True. I’ve lived in so many secular pockets of America, both on purpose and not. So I can confirm that Pratt is religious by American standards according to many people(although my experience is anecdotal of course, so me confirming this probably doesn’t mean much).

Especially by the standards of Hollywood, where even the most devout Christians seem more quiet about it than him. And it’s not like I’m saying that America isn’t an overly Christian country in general, despite the separation between church and state(as ostensible as it seems at times) . But I feel like most other countries in the world where Christianity is the dominant religion are “weirdly religious” in some ways, so I really don’t think America is exceptional in that regard.

Pratt is weirdly religious by Hollywood standards but he'd fit right in among the megachurch heartland. America being overtly Christian or not isn't what feeds the "weirdly religious" impression among non-Americans anyway. It's the particular way that religiosity manifests itself in the country, among all the other extremes. Italy, for example, is extremely religious, but it doesn't seem out of place at all.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t disagree with the first part, because he would fit right in with that crowd. But I admit I don’t quite understand what you’re trying to get across with the rest of your comment. How does the way the religiosity manifests itself in the country make it exceptionally “weirdly religious”? And how does it seem out of place compared to other extremely religious countries like Italy? Especially because Italy is home to the Vatican itself(although I know that Vatican City is considered a separate city-state, bordering on a micronation, but it did start out as part of Italy). America does have places like the Bible Belt, small town Flyover country, and non-metropolitan areas of the South. But it doesn’t feel that different from other religious countries other than location and local customs.

I’m usually all for making fun of America’s faults, but I don’t know about this being a fault individual to America. So far, it just seems like the standards people are usually for what makes the religiosity in America “weirdly religious” compared to other extremely religious countries that have a longer history with Christianity in general is just a distinction without much difference.

Maybe all Christian countries feel equally weirdly religious to me because I’m an atheist who feels uncomfortable around hyper-religious people in general, so it’s coloring my perception of the differences between the way it might be different in America compared to elsewhere. That’s entirely possible. I was also lucky to have all my religious relatives be as progressive and open-minded as religious people can be. So maybe that and my equally anecdotal experiences with being very lucky to have never lived in an oppressively Christian pocket of the country are also coloring my perception.

DA

Italian American dual citizen here. I'm an agnostic bordering on atheist depending on my mood.

Yes, some Italians are very religious and they fit in well with Italian society. However, there are a good many others who don't bother much with religion. One of the bigger reasons being is that they don't like to pay taxes to restore religious shrines, churches, and other holy sites.

I guess that is what you get when you don't separate church and state much.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, going full-scale jingoistic at little to no provocation is definitely one of the things that reinforce these impressions, so thanks for immediately going there.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn’t call it jingoistic, just very defensive.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And also, how would being defensive or jingoistic in the way AYRT was, by denying that America is as hyper-religious as non-Americans think, reinforce anyone’s impressions that Americans really are as weirdly religious as they think? It definitely might reinforce someone’s perceptions that Americans are thin-skinned and can’t take criticism or observations, for sure. But an American basically going “nuh-uh!” when someone says they’re super religious isn’t proving they are, in and of itself. Unless you’re taking that as them being in denial? In which case, sure. That’s fair I guess.

+1000000

(Anonymous) 2021-12-17 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Guess AYRT touched a nerve! Honestly, it's so many Americans' defensive refusal to just fucking own their bullshit that continually renews my contempt for the US. When you get too drunk and vomit in the pool, learn to apologize, not just to your friend who was closest, but to everyone else in the fucking pool. smh.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-18 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
So you have contempt for an entire country and it’s population based on the loudest and most obnoxious people in it? People here sealion and deflect to “well the US does this” every time any other country is being judged for anything. And it would still be very dumb to have contempt for their entire country, or infer that everyone there is incapable of taking responsibility for their own bad actions. Because not everyone from there is doing that same deflecting.

I mean honestly, if I had that kind of money I'd build a grotto to the Virgin Mary on my property and hang out in it all the time. If anything I'm annoyed by how boring his big, showy, display of faith is.
