So, I have a general question about when people get into the whole discourse on this subject. (Really, any "oh they're only straight, or they're gay, or they're ace", or what have you).
Are people making this argument about the actual canon? Or...because to me, even if there's an argument about the canon, in fandom, the character can be and do whatever you want them to. If you want to read into the relationships they have (platonic or otherwise) or read into their actions to justify your fanwork interpretation, then that's fine. But to argue X must be canon -- see how, I mean, to what end? Especially if they're in fandom, because it's literally (for me at least) been the place where you don't have to STRICTLY abide by canon.
You want Dean and Cas together? Go for it! It will have no bearing on my own fan work of portraying Dean as strictly het. I'll admit that personally I think he's a little bi inside (just a wee bit), but mostly straight. And that will have no bearing on the actual canon nor how a Dean/Cas shipper will go about their own fan works. The same applies for Kahlen/Cara on Legend of the Seeker (which I do ship).
I get why people get worked up if it had to do with representation, but aside from that, it's fandom. Where. You. Can. Do. Whatever. There's a married couple? Not anymore! They never met! Or they divorced! Or whatever! You're free to make AUs. I just don't know why people want to fight. :/
