Side-note rant (because I've just seen someone complaining about it agina):

Tbh, I don't get why people who are in fandoms where we always deal with multiple versions of characters co-existing at the same time in tons of versions (across various fics, but also, increasingly, especially in comics-adjacent content, across various media)have such a big problem with accepting that Cruella's Cruella or Maleficent's Maleficent are just dfifferent takes on the originals, and those two variants are not evil. Those films are just AUs to the "originals" - I get not liking them, but I don't get why so many peole get stuck on "why is she not evil in this one! it's wrong!".

This!

You must hang out in some weird places. Almost universally, the complaints I’ve seen about Cruella have been about how lazy and poorly done it was. There probably is a way to write a compelling story redeeming Cruella. That wasn’t it.

It was still more enjoyable than Maleficent, in my personal opinion.

That doesn’t contradict anything you’re saying, and you absolutely didn’t ask. But I still feel compelled to share opinions regardless. Feel free to disregard this.

No, that’s fair. I also agree with other anon that most of the problems would have been fixed if it had just been an original movie instead of tying it into Dalmatians.

Ayrt

I, on the other hand, haven't heard much about how poorly the film has been done* - I mostly see people who were suprised by how enjoyable they found it or people who complain about its very existance and/or state that they refuse to see it because it attempts to give the character a "redemption arc" and other people should do the same. So, clearly, different areas of Internet :)

*which I don't agree with, tbh. The story is ridiculous, but it does have some flare to it, even if it would have worked much much better if it wasn't forced to tie-in with 101 Dalmatians.

Agreed with all of this, both in my experiences and personal opinions.
