113: I know that Godot's a sexist, and that his view of women is incredibly backward, and no, I don't agree with him about it. But I still like him as a character. Sexism on an otherwise incredibly badass character doesn't make him automatically unlikeable to me. I understand if it does that for other people, but for me a character can both be likeable and have opinions I disagree with a lot.

Besides, without Godot's awful attitudes towards women, we never would have had that moment where he suddenly stopped calling her "kitten" and started respecting her as Mia, a person and a capable lawyer.

133: What's with all the Yume Nikki secrets lately? I don't want them to stop, they make me happy.

It really was a wonderful game. So many places to explore, with so much thought put into designing the weirdness in all of them. Just out of curiosity, how do you relate to Madotsuki? I hope things work out better for you than they did for her.

Man, this should teach me to spend more than a minute on my secrets so I don't have to go around explaining myself to everyone -- I know I came off as saying "I DON'T LIKE HIM SO NO ONE SHOULD LIKE HIM AND ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH ME IS SEXIST!!!" but what I meant was more "I feel like the only person who is bothered enough by this character trait to dislike him and I find that frustrating." I mean, it's always a little frustrating, I think, to feel differently about a character than the majority of the fandom does, and I felt like I couldn't explain why I disliked him without being accused of being oversensitive and taking things too seriously (which, thankfully, has not actually happened).

I can understand liking a character who is flawed or has opinions with which you disagree -- I mean, it's not that the characters I like are all paragons of virtue, it's just that they don't hit the particular buttons that put me off of a character. I know it's a very subjective thing.

TL;DR I'M SORRY I DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY?

Whoa, did I sound like I was yelling at you? I didn't mean it that way. I wasn't accusing you of being oversenstive and making fandom into serious business. I totally understand why a person would be put off by Godot's sexism, especially why a woman would be put off by Godot's sexism (not because women are more easily offended or sensitive or whatever, but because hey, they're the ones who would personally be affected by the behavior of these characters.)

I'm not going to assume what gender you are, OP, because I'm usually always wrong when I make those kind of guesses. But whatever you are, it's totally okay if sexism (especially Godot-level sexism) is an automatic put-off. I'm a girl, and because of that, I feel that there's a little bit of pressure to not like a character with sexist tendencies, if that makes any sense, and I feel like I'm kind of weird for recognizing Godot's sexist tendencies and still liking him.

It's probably my love of the Miego that keeps me liking him, but then again, one of the reasons I like the Miego is because he seems to get a little less sexist when he's dealing with her- again with the whole changing from "kitten" to "Mia" thing. We didn't see a lot of their relationship afterwards, but I liked to believe he treated her as an equal, or at least as a respected subordinate kohai type. And I'm not defending his sexism at all, but it does seem like "Mia couldn't protect herself!" was sort of a defense mechanism for dealing with her murder- the killer couldn't hold all the responsibility because he was already brought to justice and Godot couldn't change anything, and Mia couldn't be held responsible for her own death because he loved her and could never blame her for getting murdered. so of course it was because she didn't have a man there to protect her. I like to think knowing and caring about a strong, capable woman made Godot a little less of a chauvanist pig even if losing her caused him to spiral back into those sort of habits, but that's just my fanon interpretation of it.

So I guess it's kind of a cycle. I put up with his traits I really dislike because I really like other things about him, but I like the other things about him partially because they minimize his bad traits. In my headcanon.

I feel like a lot of Godot's fans, instead of saying "he's sexist, but I don't think that's a big deal", or "he's sexist, but while that bugs me he's too awesome overall to throw out the baby with the bathwater", completely deny or forget that he's a sexist at all. And that bugs me- people shouldn't ignore traits about characters they like just to continue liking them- it's like people who say they have to forget that meat comes from animals in order not to feel guilty about eating it (a personal pet peeve of mine.) We might not agree on whether to like Godot, but at least we're not burying our heads in the sand to his flaws.

tl;dr: Sexism is totally a valid reason to dislike characters, and it's something people should at least notice about the characters they like, especially when it's blatant. I'm a little worried that I should feel how you do, too, but I don't.
