Was he a hero in the original or was he just sort of there?

He was mostly there with a bit of bumbling idiot. I didn't mind the change in this one as they didn't have much to work with.

Right? For all intents and purposes "Stefan" as a character didn't exist until Maleficent. The king in the original was not only super irrelevant but had none of the same characteristics.
