I Love Lucy is one of my comfort shows and I love the hell out of it, warts and all.

ILL's sins are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, enjoy what you like. Then again, my guilty pleasures are the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies so what do I know.

tbh I rewatched it during the pandemic, and I found it a lot less problematic than shows that were made even in the 70s/80s.

I might be forgetting something obvious, since it's been awhile since I was watching regularly, but isn't ILL "problematic" sort of in the same way that TOS is "problematic"? In the sense that it was actually quite progressive for its time (showing a woman going through visible pregnancy, interracial marriage), but still was "a product of its time" in that it fed into racist/sexist stereotypes that were still common?

I mean there is definitely some stuff in there that's kind of awful by modern standards - but much like TOS, it was less awful than a lot of its media contemporaries, and they were pushing boundaries, so I have to give them credit for that. (I had the misfortune of discovering some other shows via a retro antenna-only station a few years back, and hoooooboy. No wonder I had never heard of them before.)

And regardless of problematic elements, classic comedy is classic for a reason. =)

I don't really care for a lot of the shows of that era (just can't sit through 'em, is all), but I Love Lucy is a childhood fave. I will never tire of the physical comedy in that show.

Hell yes, I've loved that show my entire life. And as others have pointed out, it may be problematic but it was still progressive for its time.

it's so clearly set in a specific era that I don't think it's worth critiquing it from a more modern context (except as that context has been replicated), though dated makes sense. It helps that a lot of the conflict is specific to the characters rather than archetypes. I feel like most people who love I Love Lucy understand its faults.

I Love Lucy is hilarious & I'm glad to see some love for it here. It was always on in the afternoon, on the "oldies" TV station when I was a kid. I grew up on it. Lots of fondness/nostalgia for it.

Counterpoint: The reason people care about Donna's fate is because she was written so well.

I do have quibbles with the writing, but RTD wrote the best companion stories, imo.

Look, taste is taste, you don't have to like RTD, it's all good.

But to say that the show never acknowledged that he did harm is completely wrong IMO. The entire point of the specials is that 10 was hubristic, meddled too much, did too much harm, and had to be punished for it. The show absolutely gets into that idea.

The discussions about bi-/pan-/omnisexuality regularly hurt my brain. They're technically all the same, but also not and maybe there are significant differences and everyone is fighting about it?
(As someone who is ace, but is otherwise romantically open to any gender, I just go by what people personally identify as/feel most comfortable with and stay very much out of it.)

I find that most of them are about some weird minor villain/secret they didn't get into earlier or it's prepping you for the sequel game. The protags always win in the bonus versions too though!

+1, one thing is to give hero characters possible flaws they didn't have before, but I dislike when they make them a villain.

Utopia secret! I don't have many thoughts on the secret itself, but the show certainly hits differently now. (And I'm secretly glad it's not very well known, because I could see it becoming part of the discourse.)

I would love some more bi heroes, hopefully ones that don't up in a pseudo-heterosexual relationship by the movie's end too, and with Disney/Sony having woken up to the fact they absolutely do not need to kowtow to China to make all the money on their movies we might just get them.
