Even as someone who plays games regularly, I find I actually tend to pick more up when I'm watching let's plays because I'm not having to think about navigating my way through the game, and I can focus more on the plot/characters/dialogue and rewind if I miss anything. Especially when dialogue happens during an action sequence...double especially if that dialogue isn't voiced. I'm fighting monsters right now, game, I'm not gonna stop to read your subtitles.

This! I do pick some things up when playing the games for myself, but not as much as when I watch LPs for them. Especially because I’m not always likely to go for multiple endings on my own, and those are sometimes pivotal to the overall story. So that’s where watching others play really helps!
