How they choose to express their support for it, be it in kudos/comments/bookmarks/favorites/whatever, is their call. Writers complain so much about how there isn't much engagement nowadays, and I think a lot of that is because it seems like readers can't please them no matter what they do. Kudos aren't enough, and if they comment, even if it's a positive comment, it's either too short or doesn't say enough about the fic, there's debate over whether or not constructive critique is acceptable, etc.
A preference in the kind of support one gets is one thing, but I dunno, I'd just think any positive support of any kind is worth appreciating. The more one complains about the kind of support they're getting, the harder it'll likely be for them to get any support at all after a time.
