Sigh, yeah. Some of the plot this season didn't make a ton of sense. And that scene in particular, Geralt just stands in front of her for most of it. He could have tried to grab Ciri, suppress her, or heck, punch her (Ciri's taken worse this season). Just do something to distract the Deathless Mother while you talk to Ciri. I'm sure Ciri would have prefered to get beaten up rather than let almost everybody die.

Also, Yennifer was making that potion and Jaskier was trying to get it to them and it was literally never mentioned again. No idea what it was. Yennifer just walks up to Geralt and Ciri, doesn't think to grab it even though it was apparently important?!

I really didn’t want another live action Witcher but that first proper trailer was amazing! I’m surprisingly bitter about how objectively bad this show is ); I can’t tell who they’re making it for; it doesn’t make much sense if you don’t already know the characters and their world but if you do then it’s horribly disappointing how many important things they left out because the show runners don’t seem to have firsthand knowledge of the source material.

Yeah, that wasn't logical. The whole thing (both these actions and the entire season) weren't terribly good. I could see where they were going and what they wanted to achieve, and I'm all in for found familities in general, but it didn't work. Also, the whole episode would have much more weight to it if the non-Geralt and non-Vesimir witchers had formed some real bonds with Ciri, overcoming that weird antagonism to her (and Triss) that served as about 80% of their character features.
