I DON'T THINK I CAN LAST A WEEK.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
THIS WEEK NEEDED MOAR WATCHMEN SEKRITS.

IA SOFA KING HARD WITH THE COMMENT ABOVE ME.

I enjoyed the "FORGET HIS SCRAWNY ASS I'D HIT THIS" Joker and Comedian secret. It definitely brought the lulz.

HE'S JUST PASSING THE PROVERBIAL TORCH THERE,ISN'T HE?

You realize that the watchmen movie has only been out for a week, those secrets that pertain to it haven't been posted yet. The backlog is about two weeks or so off. Trust me, there will be a flood, it never fails.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Um, okay, but I wanted sekrits this week, not two weeks from now. :P

I fail to see the point of your comment.

(Maybe I'm just insulted you felt the need how fandom!secrets works to me. I know, I know, on the internet one has to assume everyone is an idiot unless proven otherwise)

I asked a friend about this. She says:

"It means to know yourself. Such as you want to do something, everybody but you knows you can not make it, but you still want to try. In this case someone may say you have to [secret writer's text]. It is not a nice word. It can be said when people are arguing or against each other, or just laughing at somebody."

Dammit... I saw a secret recently that I was gonna wait till Friday to reply to it (since it was the only secret that I wanted to reply to that day). But I'm not seeing it tn any of this week's entries, so it must have been last week...

It's a secret about how someone considers Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged their official Yu-Gi-Oh canon, and I wanted to say that I totally agree! ^_^

Re: I know you're just as curious as I was.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sure there was absolutely no way that could have been said in English

lol right?

i hate to indulge the writer's pretentiousness but damn i can't help my curiosity, especially not when my newest best friend is from china.

Curse you, Asian languages and your complexities! *shakes fist at the sky*

O lawd, I think you mean my secret; it was too big, so that's why it didn't appear. But thankyou very much for the comment! 8D

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
So "know your limits," but with an especially derisive connotation to it.

Charming. And clearly quite inexpressible in English. Oh, wait.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you're right! It was Tuesday's too big #2... I really should have kept looking through the TBs...
Anyway, I so agree... I just love what LK does with the series and the characters. ^_^

Not everything can be translated perfectly into English. And even when it sorta kinda can be, in this case it still took 2 lines of text to attempt to approximate the general meaning and implications of the word in English, compared to the actually appropriate 4-character word.

Honestly, this is like faulting a person for using an English word that has more than 3 syllables and is not normally used in common everyday speaking. If it means the right thing exactly the way you want to say it, there is no good reason not to use that word.

Re: I know you're just as curious as I was.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-14 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It still makes the secret writer look pretentious, srry2say.

Oooooor.... maybe the secret-writer is just Chinese?

This sort of has to do with Thursday's 144.
I feel like the only one who fangirled over that. =P

I'm gonna just... leave now. xD

No, there's a perfectly good reason in this specific scenario. Fandom Secrets is mostly written and read in English. I wouldn't have had a problem with this secret writer using another language if they have translated it for us on the same secret. Otherwise, yes. Pretentious, especially a secret that is written on the subject of wank.

Too lazy to look back, but RE the Athena/Diomedes secret - F!S needs more classics shipping :D

(Anonymous) 2009-03-14 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you sound like an idiot, so I don't think this is her fault.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious as to why you think I sound like an idiot. By the way, commenting anonymously to insult me, how low can you go? I honestly am not bothered by strangers calling me names on the internet but disgusted when people do it anonymously.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I do see that I made a typo in my response but everyone makes typo and you are the "idiot" for thinking typos are a reflection on someone's intelligence.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus fucking christ am I putting my foot in my mouth on this one.

Typos*

(Anonymous) 2009-03-14 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it was more to do with your reply sounding like you were back-peddling in an effort to not sound like an idiot. The typos just added to the overall impression.

I always post anon on FS, I do not wish my flist to know I am here. But feel free to think it's all about you if it makes you feel some how superior.

Re: I know you're just as curious as I was.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-14 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And?

They obviously know enough English to write the rest of the secret. I don't post in Chinese comms because I don't speak or understand it. I'm not saying that a Chinese person should never speak Chinese in an 'English speaking' place ever, but if they are making a secret/post for an audience that generally speaks English, that is what they should use (or provide as good a translation as possible). Or maybe they should have asked an English speaking friend to translate for them rather than expecting the thousands of members of this comm to each do it individually.

[identity profile] entro-pist.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I still want to see Comedian/Joker.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)

Ah, so you still think I'm an idiot? I'll keep that in mind. My first comment was meant to be taken lightheartedly and I thought that was pretty obvious due to the purposeful misspellings and CAPSLOCK. Making a comment of that nature does not make me ignorant of how fandom!secrets is run. For miribai to feel the need to explain that to me in a condescending manner implied that she assumed I lack intelligence; naturally, I was offended. I added the last bit about assuming everyone on the internet is an idiot before I posted because although I was offended I could see the reasoning in assuming I’m an idiot.
Your comment just royally pissed me off. Personally, I don’t think it is good internet etiquette for an anonymous poster to interject a comment that has nothing to do with them. Not only did you interject, you insulted me anonymously which, again, is poor etiquette in my opinion. I don’t know why you only post anonymously but maybe you need a new flist if you feel that they shouldn’t know what you really think. Why would you assume that being insulted anonymously makes me feel superior? I only feel disgust that you have no problem insulting people anonymously. If you are going to mock or insult someone, don’t be a coward about it. And if there is no way for you to do that, just don’t do it at all, for fuck’s sake.

OH DUDE WHOA.

YOUR ICON.

I saw Onmyoji and Onmyoji II both sort of by accident, they were just on Showtime or something. BLEW MY MIND.

[identity profile] onydanse.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Having originally studied to be a translator in college, the whole 'there's no translation so you don't have to even try' doesn't really hold for me. There are some words and phrases we adopt from other languages that we keep in the original because the translation isn't exact, or is otherwise messy, which have come into common English usage, but the rest of the time you have to do the best you can with the original word or concept and make it work in the target language. Imagine reading Kafka and coming across German word after German word in your English 'translation' with a note at the bottom for each telling you to ask a friend who's fluent in German what this means. It's ridiculous. And in such a case, as in this one, it would most likely mean the writer has no damn clue what it means himself, is lazy as hell, or just wants to show off how much German he knows, and how little you don't.

Still, what really irritated me about this one is that this is fandom secrets, not school. Don't give me frickin' homework. So, no, I didn't track down a Chinese speaker to ask about this. I guess I get a zero for the day.

Dear Sir/Madam,

It has come to my attention that you not only appear to be suffering from an acute attack of the idiot virus, but also from quite a severe case of thin-skinneditis. I was so awfully sorry to hear this and I do hope that it clears up in the future with no long lasting issues. I will pray for your well being.

I would also like to thank you immensely for this interesting discussion about netiquette. Thank you for enlightening me to this amazing wonder of the interwebs. Truly, you have enriched my surfing time. I am not entirely sure I am capable of thanking you sufficiently for the edumuncation you have provided. Please know that I have taken it to heart, hopefully knowing that your attempt to edumuncate the unwashed anon masses of the web has at least resulted in a change for the better for this one pitiful anon.

May the wires rise up to meet you, and may the web traffic be ever at your back.

Yours Sincerely,
Anon #6,239,827,490,238.

Omg! Me, too! My friend had seen the second one on Showtime as it had been playing for several days and we were quite hooked. Must've watched it a few days in a row...

Monday 132:

I can't remember which community that was and am too lazy to check, but I think it's idiotic that people complain about things like that. Usually there is a good reason for that - PEOPLE DON'T POST ENOUGH SECRETS! I've read many communities like that and even when they post that rarely, sometimes the posts are very short because of a lack of secrets. It's the thing with specialized communities. Also, there's no patience needed if you add it to your flist - it's easy to forget about it existing and be reminded only when there's a new post. Unless you mean the kind of patience I didn't have to keep reading communities like the Tokio Hotel secret community because it was so full of idiotic wank and obviously fake secrets.

[identity profile] savvy-sleek.livejournal.com 2009-03-15 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Madam is fine. :)
I really do the best I can, but as an idiot my work only goes so far. Unsurprisingly, you have been misinformed, I am not suffering from "thin-skinneditis" but an allergic reaction to spiteful cowards who hide behind the anonymity of the internet. Also, it has come to my attention that you suffer from a severe lack of self-awareness which manifests itself in an inability to see when you are obviously mistaken.
The fact that you responded with an attempt at humor and not directly to my comment illustrates that somewhere in that narrow mind of yours you know insulting people anonymously isn't at all an admirable past time.
Cheers! And just so you know, I will be praying for you.
