Okay, as an indie author who has spent the last hell year posting to different websites only to have Wattpad sell out to Viacom for Datamining (really guys, go take your shit down b/c you aren't going to be paid for any of your ideas and they'll make shows off of the popular trends or whatever. Don't give them fodder.) Here is my take: AO3 technically is not for original IP. The site isn't set up for it. They have a spot for it, but even THEY SAY it's not for original IP. I can't post a kofi or a patreon there, NO ONE IS LOOKING for Original IP on AO3, there's the "download as file" feature which means I have zero control over the distribution of my MS. And all the trending stories are porn and don't have nearly the stats fandom stories do. All understandable. So, as an indie author of original IP, I'm saying it's not really worth it to post there unless you're writing porn or you don't care about controlling your MS/making money. And if you don't, valid! Have fun.

Right now I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do next. Wattpad is done. I got nothing there. Royal Road wasn't bad. Wordpress still it's only little world. I refuse to go back to anything related to FF.net (this mean FP.net is out.) Me no trusty. I hear Scribble Hub is okay. Haven't tested it. Not touching Quotev. Tumblr, the tags aren't working right now and never seem to work for long posts anyways. Useless. I write too long chapters for Reddit and the serial machine demand would burn me out. It's a rough world out there for an indie and I can see the appeal of AO3 if you KNOW about AO3.

What I would kill for is an original version of AO3 that either lets us post works or... links to works. Sort things by genre. Make sure people can't sort one fic into 3 or more genres. Royal Road is OKAY but it's not... AO3's level. (RR is like a knock off wattpad with slightly better interface for SFF.) But I know I'm dreaming here.

TL:DR AO3 isn't set up for Original Work and I wish there was an AO3 FOR original work and original work ONLY. Cheers.

AO3 is open source, so you could, in fact, set up an AO3 clone only for original works.
