(Anonymous) 2022-01-10 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)It’s not bad to be ignorant of anything, of course. And it’s also fine to assume a tattoo is harmless. But it’s always a 50/50 chance of whether they are or not, so I don’t get being defensive on behalf of complete strangers when someone disagrees about their tattoos being innocent, unless you know for sure they are. It might seem overly suspicious, and it could very well be. But unless you know, it’s still a gamble. Unless the tattoo was seen in a community where the symbol would still he expected to have the original meaning, and/or there isn’t really a known Nazi population, that is.
And comparing this to people getting Chinese characters without knowing what they mean isn’t the best comparison. It might have been before the Nazis came for things like Norse and Celtic runes, because those were just letters in the same way as Chinese characters. And Nazis stealing these symbols does so much harm to the cultures and people that they originated from, like an anon pointed out downthread. And that’s on top of the harm that Nazis already bring.
