da

I mean...we're in the middle of a global pandemic that's drastically curtailed a lot of people's social interactions, so yeah, probably there is someone out there who's doing this kind of thing out of loneliness. More power to them if they are.

But more importantly, did you just arrive in fandom yesterday? Deciding to eat some cake because it's a character's birthday isn't weird. People throw entire events for character birthdays. Or other significant canon dates. Or the anniversary of a work's release. Or the author's birthday. Or because "May the fourth be with you" amuses them. Sometimes in person with other people, sometimes online with other people, sometimes alone.

Fandom oldie here. To be honest, this parasocial stuff is a new fandom thing.

Fellow fandom oldie here and no, it's absolutely not new. I remember people talking about being married to characters in the 90s. Heck, there was even a website you could go to that would generate a "marriage certificate" for you and the fictional character of your choice.

Yes, but those people were very clearly mentally unstable and everyone knew it.

So you admit that you were full of it when you said “parasocial stuff is new to fandom”. Because that’s exactly what it was back then too. Or are you going to back peddle now and insist that it totally didn’t count then?

Better phrasing would be parasocial relationships were treated like the mental illness they are back then and not normal like they are now.

That's...not what parasocial means.

Also, if you were actually a fandom oldie, you'd know damn well that neither this nor actual parasocial relationships are new things at all.
