I was questioning whether or not to post this somewhere, so decided to make it a secret. It's a little bit long.

When I was 15-17 I was a small artist in X fandom, I always got 200 notes at absolute max, but was slowly integrating into the circle of artists of the time.

One really weird day one of the BNF artists send me a Tumblr chat with “Are you a bot?”, I made a, admittedly cringy, joke about it but said “no, why do you ask?”.

“Because you never comment anything in my art you reblog.” I got confused by it, why did it matter? they had 1000+ other followers engaging with them, but got flustered and tried to explain myself “English is my second language and I’m very shy, I never know what to say.”

“Well, English is my second language too.” ok??? “Honestly, I feel pity for people like you.” what.

Now, this sounds very funny, nowadays I laugh about it, but I was an anxious and depressed 15 teen talking with a BNF everyone adored. my anxiety was already starting to flare up, I ran from my room to drink some water, my mom even asked if I was ok, all of this was stupid so I said it was fine.

I got back to my computer a minute later. They had said some other things I don’t remember, then when they had noticed my silence (went to drink water) they tried to fake apologize by trauma dumping on me. I just wanted it to be okay, so I tried to relate to them by bringing up I understood trauma (my own) and that it was fine. They didn’t reply.

I got so, but so anxious at the time I couldn’t sleep and got the courage to check their blog, they had posted about how people who always draw characters uncomfortable are fishy, I did that, it was a good way to express my own anxieties and reality at the time, the other BNF liked the post.

At the time it sucked, the worst week I ever had, when they showed up in my dash I cowered, it was so SO dumb. Nowadays I genuinely laugh at this and can’t help but get a superiority high from this story because at least I never pulled this shit with anyone, “I pity people like you.” I think I lost a great opportunity to have a Disney tier villain in my life lol. I do wish I had been more pissed at the time, I was too submissive. Oh well, I can only hope you’re a better person now you goddamn asshole.

Semi-related, but I'm waiting for somebody to get physically attacked over celebrity stan drama. Not a celeb themself, but like critics who fans doxx when the critic gives their fave a bad review. Or fans who send their favorite celebrity's exes death threats (specifically just remembered John Mayer DMing somebody who told him to kill himself last month, and the person who sent it getting embarrassed and saying they didn't think he would see it). There have always been crazies out there, but it feels like we're heading down an especially bad road right now. There's such a disconnect in people's minds between what they say online and what happens in real life on the other side of that exchange.

Well that is AO3's entire mission, to provoke that massive lawsuit. That is why they keep those lawyer's on retainer and fundraise mercilessly for them. They want that big lawsuit to overturn the very concept of copyright and make everything public domain at point of publication. The AO3 mods encourage the rubes contributors to keep on pushing that limit to try and get the big C&D notice to take all the way to SCOTUS. I hope it does end up with a big loss for them though, and if it pushes fandom back into the gray areas a bit then so be it.

Have you really seen these "in public?" Can you link to one that's been "broadcast" to the "public"?

Asking because I find that when people say "in public" they really mean "places where I personally can see and be annoyed by them" when they're not the same thing. I've seen this sort of stuff being posted to people's personal blogs or maybe the occasional character-specific community, but it seems inaccurate to classify those spaces as the general public
