Look for a bread machine on FB marketplace or a freecycle group. People are always giving them away or selling them for cheap. They do work pretty well, but yeah, it's cheapest just to make french bread.

Homemade bread comes out really nice and stays fresh longer, IMO.

I have had a bread machine, and i really liked it. But at this stage, I don't eat much bread at all, so I just buy these nice half-loaves from the grocery. They have a nice variety and it's enough for what I want without it going bad when I don't eat it. I get two or three on sale and sling 'em into my freezer. Same with butter - if it's on sale (and it's usually really a good bargain), i get the most i can afford and freeze the extra.
