Games thread!

When it comes to fantasy, if it isn't pseudo mediaeval castles and crowns, then it isn't worth in any case. High fantasy, castles, crowns, and not ASOFAI style cry for psychological help.

I'm not really into this version of The Witcher (especially after S2 which I found less messy, but unfortunately more boring and just less fun than S1, even if it got noticeably prettier), but honestly that thing about "a narrative rooted in a specific culture [being turned into] a hodge-podge of Panslavic and general fantasy elements" wouldn't be a hill I would chose to die on - this collection of characters, fantasy tropes, and world-building elements was never /that/ specific.

I was with you until the last couple points. Then the excruciating font/background combo tagged me out.

Ouch.

i'd pay for that energy towards the games.
that's all i gotta say sry haven't watched it

Yes!
Judging characters only by their sword and fight skills isn't as feminist as creators think

Preach.

Although I get why it's used so often and what it's doing in narratives - it's just a shortcut for modern readers, like the whole damn "getting free from the corset" trope. A looooot of stories set in historical settings are not really interested in historically accurate details and sentiments, but mostlt in certain tropes and visual trappings.

Before factories or any real form of industrialization, if a woman didn't know how to at least help with making her own new clothes, she didn't get many new clothes. Designing, sewing, and embroidering all the clothes, cushions, curtains, etc for a household was the job of all the women in the medieval/Renaissance home. And it all took longer, because there were no sewing machines. Same with cooking. Someone had to do it, because it took hours. Oh, and since women were often not allowed in art schools, it might be the only form of artistic expression she had.

Plus, there was no internet, no tv, no radio, not even recorded music. So what else do you do with your hands while you're listening to someone read out loud, or sing the news to you?

I dunno, first season had such a high energy of LARP groups of my pretty much slavic childhood/youth.
I don't really like nor show nor books, so whatever

Anyone who decries embroidery as 'frivolous girly waffle' has clearly never tried actually doing it, that shit is hard and making it look good is even harder. I've got mad respect for anyone that can do that by hand, it's impressive as hell.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-12 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people still do that?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-12 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is phrased in a way I don't understand.
