Isn't that what "Pick Me Girls" are though? Putting down other women to make themselves seem cooler, especially to men in power? I agree that it's really unlikable behavior but but I disagree that a woman wouldn't say that. I've heard worse.

The body description there sounds exactly like something out of Bridget Jones's Diary (a book I absolutely loathed), but that's a woman scrutinizing her own body, not anyone else's. This whole exchange feels like Curtis read it, too, and assumed that's how women talk to/about each other.

I missed out on Love Actually the first time around and shit like this means I'll give it a pass forever. Anytime a movie tries to describe a relatively thin/straight-sized and attractive woman as fat and/or plain, or even just imply that she is, it takes me right out of the whole thing because I feel like I'm being gaslit. Why do they do this? Why do they keep doing this?

It... wasn't written with the intention of bodyshaming her, though. It's been a while since I last listened to the commentary, but I remember Curtis talking there about how he wrote it as a joke about how the word 'fat' was being applied to skinnier and skinnier women as time went on, and he was greatly saddened that everyone who saw the movie just took it at face value instead of seeing it as ridiculous the way he'd intended it.
You can say it's badly written, sure, but don't just assume the intention of the writer as definitely being the worst possible option without evidence.

Although I get why it's used so often and what it's doing in narratives - it's just a shortcut for modern readers, like the whole damn "getting free from the corset" trope. A looooot of stories set in historical settings are not really interested in historically accurate details and sentiments, but mostlt in certain tropes and visual trappings.

Before factories or any real form of industrialization, if a woman didn't know how to at least help with making her own new clothes, she didn't get many new clothes. Designing, sewing, and embroidering all the clothes, cushions, curtains, etc for a household was the job of all the women in the medieval/Renaissance home. And it all took longer, because there were no sewing machines. Same with cooking. Someone had to do it, because it took hours. Oh, and since women were often not allowed in art schools, it might be the only form of artistic expression she had.

Plus, there was no internet, no tv, no radio, not even recorded music. So what else do you do with your hands while you're listening to someone read out loud, or sing the news to you?

Eh. I get the sentiment but personally, I always really hate it when characters who were forced into crossdressing/acting like the opposite gender/transformed against their will are assumed to be trans. There are several examples in media and it always makes me cringe. Like, forcing someone into performing a gender they're not is the very opposite of a good/positive depiction of trans people. It's exactly what trans people struggle with.
So all that "yep, this character totally is the gender they were forced to be against their will, slay trans queen/king" has a major yikes factor for me.

Slight follow up, does the state of Mississippi have alligators living in it, or is that just Florida and the very southern tip of Louisiana? How far north along the river do alligators live, if at all?
