Was about to say this. As I recall from older literature, men in certain circumstances learnt (or were even expected to know) how to mend and darn their own clothes/footwear, too. The Art of Manliness has a couple of articles on alterations to clothing, including sewing buttons and leather, so... I just sort of figured this was doubly true if they didn't have servants to do it for them.
