Re: Worst Birthday Stories

(Anonymous) 2022-01-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
One year, late teens, I had a spectacularly terrible birthday.
+ Asked for a BBC-produced DVD boxset. This was back when importing that sort of content was still a bit niche and expensive but not unheard of. My mom went to one store, couldn't find it. Employee at the Cinema One said it didn't exist. (It did.) Mom called me, screaming and swearing, telling me I had wasted her day and embarrassed her until I started crying and had to hang up the phone.
+ Mom insisted we do a pedicure on the day of. She didn't give me any previous warning and my legs were super hairy, so I didn't want to go that day and hoped we could do it next week. She said, 'fine, we'll do it another day,' and then... drove us there anyway, insisted I go in with her, and then yelled at me later for not seeming grateful and happy.
+ Family asked where I wanted to go for dinner. I listed a specific seafood restaurant. We end up going to a completely unrelated buffet restaurant because my younger cousins wouldn't eat seafood. No one really consulted me on the decision or told me my choice wasn't happening (but my mother did take the opportunity to brutally insult my cousins, who are generally lovely, when I brought it up with her). Learned I was allergic to tree nuts that night thanks to my throat closing up after trying a sauce.

In my mother's defense, she was in a really bad relationship that year. But I started taking weekend trips for my birthdays after that rather than setting aside the time for family and have zero regrets.
