Eh. I get the sentiment but personally, I always really hate it when characters who were forced into crossdressing/acting like the opposite gender/transformed against their will are assumed to be trans. There are several examples in media and it always makes me cringe. Like, forcing someone into performing a gender they're not is the very opposite of a good/positive depiction of trans people. It's exactly what trans people struggle with.
So all that "yep, this character totally is the gender they were forced to be against their will, slay trans queen/king" has a major yikes factor for me.

Somebody wrote a genderswap fic in my fandom that explored the fact that realistically, characters would get a huge sense of gender dysmorphia from it. It was so well done, really hammered home the psychological discomfort and distress of having a gender/body disconnect.

But because it was a cis guy who was transformed by a spell into a woman, the fic was denounced as transphobic and the writer hounded out of fandom. Sigh. :(

Yeah, can't say I'm surprised.
Very tired of the "you're transphobic if you don't refer to this character as the gender they were forced to be against their will" crowd either.

I’m going to draw an odd analogy here. I saw someone explain why they wrote Portal fanfic where Caroline as GLaDOS ended up ironically empowered. As they explained it, writing a likable character who experienced bodily violation and continued to feel violated for decades seemed too uncomfortable for them. I can imagine people reclaiming gender stuff in the same way.

(And of course, there’s the “fuck your regressive story about how women who dress as men are still weak and feminine and need men to protect them” factor. That’s a thing I’ve seen more than once.)

Yeah, can't say I'm a fan of that. Because that's basically whitewashing an immensely transphobic narrative ("You are what other people force you to be") and no amount of "reclaiming" (or in this case saying "you know, the narrative is right, you totally ARE what they force you to be teehee #translivesmatter") can make this better in my eyes. In fact, it makes it worse.
