This. I very strongly dislike this movie, and this is just one of many reasons.

As a kid I used to love Jimmy Stewart movies, with his aw shucks thing he had going on, but looking back as an adult; he kinda always played assholes who only seemed nice. So many of Jimmy Stewart's roles are the guy who seems nice, but once you start analysing them they get real dark and kinda icky really quickly.

I like Jimmy Stewart in his normal roles but I definitely think he should have played more villains because he was absolutely great at it.

A friend of mine used to do a spot-on Jimmy Stewart impression and then say really screwed-up, dark things, like how he banged someone's grandma and she died during (I said dark!) It was actually hilarious.

That sounds hilarious!

Did he ever record it??? I would love to hear/see it!!!

I wonder if that was a Stewart thing or more of a Capra thing?

Even Mr. Smith? I think for most of his movies, maybe not Capra, the darker edge is the point, imo.

Agreed.

If you're thinking about his work in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, I'd say that was very deliberate.
