I'm currently working on a fake dating fic. This fic has been reworked and retooled so fucking much. This is like the third or fourth reimagining from start to finish. It's so different from where it started. It was originally about MC having a crush on his best friend's girlfriend. He gets over the crush when he has a late night encounter with a woman who visits the place he works at. Like, he realizes he was feeling lonely, the crush was a shallow crush.
The current version (I'm like 95% done with the first draft) is OC and MC meet and pretend to date to get out of a sticky situation. More chance encounters happen and they're pretending to date to show up their exes and along the way they catch genuine feelings. Typical cute fluff with no real villains because I care more about the couple being cute together.
My OC is too caught up in her studies and trying to move on from her most recent breakup to see MC romantically until they're pretending to date. They're each other's Manic Pixie Dream Date. MC is actually just competitive with his ex because they were friends before they dated and they broke up because they fought all the time. OC and her ex were bored in their relationship and her ex is moving away soon anyway. There's a half hearted jealousy going on between them when they meet again, but OC has better chemistry with MC and their exes are getting along too. There isn't a need for a "Liar Revealed" scene IMO since no one's feelings get hurt (though I do have OC tell MC "hey we have to tell our exes that we were pretending to date this whole time but we're dating for real now later" and MC's ex had lied to them about dating OC's ex).
I'm so sorry if this sounds confusing and makes no sense. I swear...I hope it makes sense in context. T.T

This fic is part of a One Hitter series that exists in an AU and I am making it up as I go along (I don't recommend this). I already have the next One Hitter plot planned out, and I'm excited for it. We'll see if I feel too burned out to write it once I'm done with the fake dating fic I'm currently writing.
The new One Hitter is a camping story where MC and OC are lost in the woods...handcuffed together. I LOVE THIS TROPE AND I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO WRITE THIS FIC. I have never been able to think of a good enough plot and couple to write this fic....until now. I'm so excited for it.

I always feel too close to the plot in a way to have characters really fall for each other -- that's what sometimes will cause me to retool it -- what caused it for you?
