Responding to this late but!: TBH I'm tired of "...as a plot/literary device" argument. EVERYTHING in a story is a plot/literary device. That's all stories are made up of. It's like saying you're tired of brick houses being made of bricks. You can dislike stories which include it. You can be uncomfortable with it but basically this boils down to writers not being able to touch upon uncomfortable, heavy topics ever. Among the list of things which are included in "plot devices": cheating on S/O, money loss/gain, murder, loss of family member, loss of friend, friend/family member in need of rescuing, being stranded, surviving out in the wild, war, etc. I get why rape, specifically, is very touchy for some people (I have that history, I get it) and I also get there's lots of stories out there which handle it very insensitively or fumble things. But I'm so, so tired of "it's bad writing because there's rape end of" that constantly gets brought up.

Say you're uncomfortable with it and dislike it but please stop framing it as a bad thing to include point blank for any reason. For fucks sake some survivors (raises hand) write about it at times. I hate when people use murder as a plot device, I hate when people use saving the world as a plot device, I hate when people use a bomb as a plot device...see how dumb that sounds?
