(And now I wonder if people write about the Kabbalists of Safed. >.<;;; Blasphemous, I know but it'd be amusing.)

I just learned about the Shabbatean movement (pardon any spelling errors; I've seen it spelled so many ways) and as soon as I learned about the dynamics between Nathan and Zevi I was like "oh fuck. I ship it."

Nathan tops, btw.

lol With sentences like, "The men of the village went to greet the Shabbos Bride in their finest clothes" (something like that, I know they talk about it in Raphael Patai's "The Hebrew Goddess" and a Perle Besserman book.) it REALLLLLY makes you wonder about them (the Chaverim/Lion Cubs/Safed Kabbalists). ~~and you just know that meeting with the Bride is enough to make anyone "lightly inebriated"~~ I'm really naughty, forgive me lol.

I've read about the Shabateans (I can't spell either!) in passing somewhere between Isaac Luria (The Ari) and The B'aal Shem Tov (Hasidism) in Kabbalah books. Sadly, they really don't talk too much about their relationship, so it totally went over my head. (And I've never thought to pick up the massive tome by Gershom Scholem on Tzvi. >.<)

There's alot of student/teacher shipping to be had in Early Kabbalah though now that I think about it. (Or in some cases leader/scribe, or prophet/successor) I don't think I'll look at my books the same way again though after this secret. :) (I also, sadly, ship the angels and archangels, and GASP! Shhh~ Eliyahu/Jezebel like burning. related, but unrelated, I know. There's like, no fandom.)

I just did this whoooole crazy paper about Lurianic Kabbalah and how Shabbateanism and Hasidism functioned as offshoots of it!

Although in the essay I think I referred to Shabbateanism as Lurianic Kabbalah's "bastard stepchild." I can't wait to get that paper back.

Don't think I've ever learned about the Safed Kabbalists D: When were they around? My Jewish History class (my only formal source of knowledge about Jewish history) is covering 1492 to the present, so maybe they were big before 1492? Or we just skipped them.

They are, theoretically. I think they borrow alot of ideas from it, if memory serves me right (at least on Hasidism).

The Safed mystics.... Somewhere in the late 1500s, the book I wanted to look it up in has been swallowed by my bedroom, however reading wikipedia articles on Moshe Cordovero and Isaac Luria (AKA The Ari, Arizal) that's the closest date I could get. Are you familiar with Lecha Dodi? Written by one of the Safed circle - Shlomo haLevy Alkabetz (my spelling might be off) They were first called the Chaverim, and then changed their name to the Lion Cubs when Luria took over leadership. (What I wouldn't give to read a historical novel about them! OMG the little bits and pieces out of books doesn't paint a clear enough picture.)

If I'm interpreting my readings correctly, Nathan basically claimed that the arrival of the Messiah (aka Zevi) represented the fact that the process of tikkun olam had been completed and the Redemption was coming. And tikkun was a theory that was pretty much introduced and popularized by Lurianic Kabbalah. Hasidism definitely incorporated more aspects of it, though.

I wish you were my professor! I'm in my second semester and have yet to get an A on a paper :( Which is more a reflection of the fact that the profs at my school are hardasses than anything else (all of them have been like "Listen, I hardly ever give As so don't expect one), but still.
